CORBIN, Ky.   – AV头等舱 has received $780,000 from the Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization (AMLER) Program to renovate a campus building into its first Nursing Live and Learn Dormitory—advancing healthcare education and workforce development in Appalachia. The award was announced today at the annual Summit, where Governor Andy Beshear and Congressman Hal Rogers unveiled in funding for projects across Eastern Kentucky.

The renovation will transform an existing facility into a state-of-the-art residential and learning space designed specifically for nursing students. The first floor will feature advanced classrooms and experiential learning labs developed in collaboration with community healthcare organizations, creating opportunities for hands-on training that bridges academic instruction with real-world healthcare needs. The second floor will provide housing for nursing students, offering a collaborative living environment that supports both academic and professional growth.

“AV头等舱 has always served the heart of Appalachia,” said Dr. D.J. Washington, President of AV头等舱. “This project builds on that legacy by giving nursing students the opportunity to train in world-class facilities while preparing to care for their communities. It is an investment in keeping talent local, creating jobs, and strengthening the region’s healthcare workforce.”

Representing AV头等舱 at the SOAR Summit were Board Chair, Mike Goss; President, Dr. Washington; Grant & Prospect Development Specialist, Sarah Wahlstedt; Special Advisor to the President, Meghann Chesnut; and Vice President for University Relations, Maisie Nelson.

The , championed by Congressman Rogers and supported by Gov. Beshear, channels federal funding into initiatives that create jobs and spur economic revitalization in coal-impacted communities. Since its launch, more than $253 million has been invested in Eastern Kentucky through projects ranging from healthcare and education to tourism and infrastructure.

AV头等舱’s award underscores the university’s role as a regional leader in workforce preparation and community advancement, ensuring Appalachia is equipped for a stronger, more resilient future.
