UCU Announces Next Round of “50 Under 50” Honorees

AVͷȲ proudly announces the next ten distinguished alumni honored as part of the university’s ongoing “50 Under 50” recognition program. The initiative celebrates alumni under the age of 50 who are driving change and making a difference in their professions and communities. Representing industries such as education, law, nonprofit leadership, athletics, and higher education, this month’s class continues to reflect the diverse impact of AVͷȲ graduates.


“These honorees are not only advancing in their respective fields — they’re also mentoring others, starting nonprofits, and championing causes that matter,” said Maisie Nelson '11, Vice President of University Relations. “They remind us of the transformative power of a AVͷȲ education and what’s possible when passion meets purpose.”


The ten honorees for June are:

April Brock ’02, ’05, ’07
  Special Education Consultant,

 A three-time AVͷȲ graduate and former classroom teacher and coach, April now supports 26 school districts through her consulting work. She is also an adjunct faculty member at Lincoln Memorial University and a founding board member of the Bell County Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2014, she was inducted into the Kentucky High School Softball Hall of Fame.

Dr. Billy Hensley ’98, ’01 
 President & CEO,

A national leader in financial literacy, Billy has led NEFE for the past seven years, growing the endowment to over $205 million and earning national recognition, including being named Best Financial Nonprofit by Bankrate. He was recently announced as the 2025 recipient of the prestigious by the Jump$tart Coalition.

Sally Hammitt ’99 
 Interim Deputy Medical Center Director,

Sally leads one of the nation’s largest VA medical centers. Formerly the Chief of Community Engagement and Reintegration Services, she oversaw the largest VA homeless program in the country and has played a critical role in disaster response efforts, including during California wildfires.

Michael Davenport ’15 
 Associate Registrar,  

A rising leader in higher education administration, Michael oversees compliance, systems, and reporting at the University of Arizona and is an award-winning member of PACRAO. He was recognized with the 2023 Emerging Leader Award.

Faith Welch ’16 
Associate Attorney,

Faith previously served as Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for Allen County, Indiana. She is a former Managing Editor of the Dayton Law Review, a volunteer judge for We The People, and frequently offers pro bono legal support to those in need.

Becky Miller ’97, ’19  
Executive Director,

As head of EKCEP, Becky leads workforce development efforts for 23 counties across Appalachia. Her career has been defined by a commitment to job training, career readiness, and supporting underserved communities throughout eastern Kentucky.

Kevin Smith ’06  
Attorney and Nonprofit Co-Founder, Law Office of Kevin R. Smith

 Kevin is the co-founder of , a nonprofit focused on mentoring and empowering students across eastern Kentucky. With degrees from Princeton and the University of Kentucky College of Law, Kevin has dedicated his legal and civic career to regional advocacy and youth empowerment.

David Fairbanks ’08 
 Owner and Coach,

David owns and operates a 14,500 square foot training facility in downtown Cincinnati, blending his passion for physical and mental wellness. A former athlete and social services professional, he integrates mental health into his programs and is a frequent speaker and youth mentor.

Alessandra Tavoloni ’06, ’08 
 Assistant Dean of Student Affairs,

 A decorated athlete and former coach, Alessandra has spent over a decade in higher education. She’s been inducted into multiple athletic halls of fame, including AVͷȲ’s and the AAC’s, and previously served on AVͷȲ’s Alumni Board.

Patrick Durham ’05 
Director of Elementary Education,

Patrick oversees 13 elementary schools, 12 preschools, and 22 extended school services programs. Recognized for his innovation in education, Patrick began his leadership journey early as one of the district’s youngest principals.

The “50 Under 50” program is designed to spotlight outstanding alumni who embody the values of AVͷȲ and inspire the next generation of students and leaders. Ten new honorees will be recognized in July.
