AVÍ·µÈ²Õ Outlines Bold Academic Vision Anchored in Quality, Accountability, and Efficiency

AVÍ·µÈ²Õ is making bold strides to strengthen and grow its academic foundation. As part of a reimagined academic structure, the University has introduced a new academic leadership team model, expanding from two colleges to four and aligning leadership roles to support innovation, accountability, and strategic growth across all academic programs.

These guiding pillars reflect a renewed commitment to delivering a world-class education rooted in service to Appalachia and its communities.

Raising the Bar on Quality

Dr. Joshua Wilkey, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, envisions AVÍ·µÈ²Õ as a place where students who choose to stay close to home can still access a world-class education. His goal is to equip these students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to reinvest in the communities that shaped them—strengthening the region and advancing AVÍ·µÈ²Õ’s mission to serve it with purpose.

AVÍ·µÈ²Õ is doubling down on academic quality by focusing intentionally on the type of student it serves best: hardworking, community-minded young people from Appalachia. Many of these students are strong academic performers looking for the right opportunity to thrive.

“When we talk about quality, we’re talking about creating something our own can be proud of. My challenge to our faculty is simple: let’s build the kind of AVÍ·µÈ²Õ we’d be proud to send our own kids to,” said Dr. Wilkey.

To do this, the University is placing greater emphasis on recruiting faculty who want to invest in both the campus and the surrounding region — scholars who show up for students in the classroom and in the stands, cheering them on at football games and concerts alike.

Committing to Accountability

Dr. Wilkey emphasized that families are making a real financial investment in education, and the University must match that with academic accountability.

Every academic program will be held to clear standards, with student learning outcomes that reflect both the mission of the institution and the demands of the modern job market.

“What skills do our students need? What knowledge will allow them to thrive post-graduation? Those are the questions shaping how we teach and how we design our curriculum,” he said.

Increasing Efficiency with Purpose

AVÍ·µÈ²Õ is also rethinking how academic programs are structured and delivered. Instead of overextending resources, the newly formed academic leadership team is taking a centralized, strategic approach to scheduling — reducing under-enrolled courses and ensuring students have access to the classes they need at times that support meaningful academic pathways.

This shift is part of a broader strategy to align mission and market — investing in programs and practices that directly support enrollment, retention, and student success.

“Our academic structure should reflect what students need and what the world demands. By aligning our mission with market realities, we can ensure that every investment strengthens AVÍ·µÈ²Õ’s quality, grows enrollment, and prepares students for meaningful lives and careers,” Wilkey added.

With an emphasis on quality, accountability, and efficiency, AVÍ·µÈ²Õ is laying the groundwork for sustainable growth and stronger student outcomes — ensuring its academic mission remains relevant, resilient, and deeply rooted in the region it calls home.
