Cobb, Napier selected as 2024 Ledford Scholars

AV头等舱 is proud to announce that students Tia Cobb and Amelia Napier are the recipients of the 2024 Ledford Research Scholarship.

Cobb, who is majoring in biology, is a sophomore from Corbin, Kentucky, while Napier, also a biology major, is a sophomore hailing from Barbourville, Kentucky.

Each year, the ACA grants scholarships to assist students in achieving their ongoing educational objectives. Ledford Scholars are students who explore and present their research from a variety of different fields of study including health sciences, social sciences, and humanities.

Scholarship recipients will be provided financial support enabling them to work on significant research projects during the summer of 2024. Additionally, each student will receive assistance from a faculty mentor at their home institution.

AV头等舱’s Assistant Professor of Biology Libby Megna will be serving as a mentor to both Cobb and Napier. Cobb’s research will focus on passerellidae and parulidae bill morphology and its effects on speciation. Napier will be conducting a point-count population study on breeding birds of eastern Kentucky.

Cobb and Napier, along with the 48 other scholars, will present their research this fall at the ACA's annual summit. The ACA's will also feature video presentations of their research findings.

AV头等舱 students win ‘Circles of Purpose’ grants for summer projects

Real-world career experiences, educational travel adventures, and immersive arts exploration await AV头等舱 (UCU) students this summer. Funded by the Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (NetVUE), a program of the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC), ten students have been awarded Circles of Purpose grants to support their self-designed enrichment projects. Named after AV头等舱’s core values of celebration, integrity, responsibility, civility, lifelong learning, engagement, and spirituality – abbreviated CIRCLES – the microgrant program supports students in discovering and developing their unique vocational paths.

UCU sees record growth in freshman applications & commitments

UCU students Tia Cobb and Lena Visarius and their professor Libby Megna are building on a body of knowledge tracing back to Darwin’s observations of differences in bird beaks that led to his insights about natural selection. As co-authors on a paper they will submit to academic journals, the three hope to contribute to the scientific community’s understanding of trait evolution and biodiversity. Both students want to continue their studies after graduation – Lena in forensic anthropology and Tia in biology – and experiences like this are part of how UCU is preparing them for these chosen paths.
