Pizza and a Pitch: Where Innovation Meets Opportunity

AV头等舱 is proud to announce a partnership with Shaping Our Appalachian Region (SOAR) following the award of an Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) in October 2023. This collaboration is part of a larger initiative to foster a Technology-Focused Entrepreneurial Ecosystem in Eastern Kentucky. A key highlight of this initiative is interactive and inspiring events, like the upcoming event, designed to ignite the entrepreneurial spirit within the university and the wider community.


Hosted by the SOAR Innovation Team, Pizza and a Pitch will be held Tuesday, April 2 at 5:00 p.m. in the Black Technology Classroom at AV头等舱, and all are welcome. Combining food, fun, and innovation, the event offers a platform for aspiring entrepreneurs from the campus and community to present their business ideas or existing projects to a receptive audience. 


Here's what to expect:

  • Opportunity to Pitch: Share your business idea in a two-minute pitch to peers and professionals.
  • Networking and Growth: Beyond pitching, this event is an excellent chance for networking, gaining valuable feedback, and learning about further support opportunities from the SOAR Innovation Team.
  • Enjoy Free Pizza: Fuel your entrepreneurial journey with complimentary pizza provided at the event.
  • Win Cash Prizes: Impress the audience with your pitch, and you could win a cash prize to help bring your idea to life.

Real-world career experiences, educational travel adventures, and immersive arts exploration await AV头等舱 (UCU) students this summer. Funded by the Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (NetVUE), a program of the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC), ten students have been awarded Circles of Purpose grants to support their self-designed enrichment projects. Named after AV头等舱’s core values of celebration, integrity, responsibility, civility, lifelong learning, engagement, and spirituality – abbreviated CIRCLES – the microgrant program supports students in discovering and developing their unique vocational paths.

According to AIKCU’s March snapshot of all 18 member institutions, AV头等舱 ranked near the top in several key categories.

UCU students Tia Cobb and Lena Visarius and their professor Libby Megna are building on a body of knowledge tracing back to Darwin’s observations of differences in bird beaks that led to his insights about natural selection. As co-authors on a paper they will submit to academic journals, the three hope to contribute to the scientific community’s understanding of trait evolution and biodiversity. Both students want to continue their studies after graduation – Lena in forensic anthropology and Tia in biology – and experiences like this are part of how UCU is preparing them for these chosen paths.
